Can the plates on ceramic hair straighteners ';go'; so to speak?

I went to stop with my mum and while I was there was allowed to use her hair straighteners. Soon after, they started going kind of rusty/dirty looking around the edges. My mother blamed me firstly saying it was because I didnt put product on my hair when i used them, then it was because I did..too hot , not hot enough etc etc. I was totally baffled as they could not be wiped clean and seemed to be getting hotter as time went on..some months and many heated discussions later..the casing of them has gone what looks like scorched..II put them on my bed the other day and they burnt the quilt( I am not using them anymore) they had never done that before. A friend of mine said the plates have ';gone'; my mother says my hair(it is only normal human hair average in every way..no excessive use of product, washed 4 times per week) has caused them to go like this. I have never had this happen to any other straighteners and I cant take much more from mum..please help somebody..many thanks...Dee xCan the plates on ceramic hair straighteners ';go'; so to speak?
basically you need new straighteners.....Can the plates on ceramic hair straighteners ';go'; so to speak?
buy a new straightener.

it must have been a cheapie.

i am getting a new CHI this wednesday.

i had a cheapie.

the plates are worn and gone.

the smell from the heat is horrible and makes your hair smell like that when you are done straightening it {{$20 Conair 2'; from Wal mart}}

it straightens well, just plates are worn, and the smell is bad, so it leaves your hair smelling burnt.

in replace of that i bought a $40 Revlon 2 ';Wet-2-Dry straigtener from Walmart.

i figured it would work better because the blades have waves in it.

it rips your hair out.

no smell.

does straighten all that well, but RIPS YOUR HAIR OUT BADLY!

and it hurts.

so finally my mother gave in and finally ordered a $130 1'; CHI straigtener from our salon that we go to.
if they have become like this from normal wear and tear then I would say you have an el cheapo brand of straightener and you need to get a new and better one.. also.. if you have had the straightener for less than 12 months.. contact the manufacturer and tell them what has happened.. ask for a refund or some kind of compensation. Unless it says otherwise.. then generally these things only come with a 12 month warranty. So sorry to say but if you've had it for more than that then the manufacturer won't be of any help.

As for putting it on your bed.. well that was silly! straighteners do get extremely hot and should never be left to rest on fabric surfaces.

As for your mum.. tell her (repectfully) that it is ridiculous to say that it is because you didn't use product. If it were because of that.. then the manufacturers would surely mention in their instruction guide that you need to apply some kind of serum or something to your hair first. The fact that she is contradicting herself by saying ';you didn't use any'; then '; you used too much'; or ';you didn't use enough';.. suggests she is just looking for someone else to blame or some excuse to pick an argument with you. Maybe suggest that she do your hair if she thinks that she knows just the right way to do it.

Good luck.
Hi Ive never had this before but the plates on mine did stop heating up once, are they cheap ones as I think all that it is is both of you using them and the hair products etc making the plates go that way, it got nothing to do with you hair at all that what they are for, so your mum should stop blaming you. its as much her fault as yours, and the manufacturors, I wouldnt use them at all if they look dodgy, get your own ones and use them.

There just cheap nasty ones.
