I honestly think you should just get a new one. If it really annoys you that much, it's not worth it. But on your new one, make sure that you're not putting any sticky stuff in your hair right before you straighten it. Could you be more specific? Is it a problem with the plates or with the hinge mechanism?

If it's a problem with the plates you should definitely invest in a new one -- regardless of product build up, plates should NOT stick to eachother and this could be a sign of a defective product -- not something you should be using.

If it's the hinge mechanism and can't be easily fixed, I would recommend buying a new one. Hair straighteners are relatively cheap and there is no reason to keep a defective one around when it could be a potential danger or nuisance.
