Will using a hair straightener damage my hair?

I really need one but when I ask my mom she says it damages my hair. Any advice? Will using a hair straightener damage my hair?
Hair straighteners DO NOT damage your hair unless you use it every day for months, then it will eventually frizz your hair and damage the strands by giving them split ends.

I couldn't live without my straightener, but don't use it every day.

Tell your mom that you just want to try it out, and then you could see if you like it, and then tell her the facts why it won't damage it.

But some older straighteners will damage it. If you have an older one, try using heat protecting spray. Will using a hair straightener damage my hair?
Yes it will, and the hotter the iron the more damage. If you must use one go to your local salon and get a professional iron and ask for instructions how to use it. You cannot put that much heat on your hair without damage, but if your hair is really curly perhaps you could only do this every once in a while. Also if you do straighten your hair you should not be washing it every day but every three or so days as to prevent further damage.

Good luck.
Yes it defenitely will in the long run. Hair straightening with a flat iron is more damaging than using the blowdryer. If you use a flat iron use it atleast less as possible no more than 2 times a week, condtion your hair like crazy to keep it strong and mostuirized. Or it will become dry and brittle, meaning a big chop.

Also use a heat protectant like Nexxus Heat protectant or Biosilk Thearphy serum, etc.

And do not blow dry your hair as well as flat iron it. Only choose one and then it will be less damaging. Blowdrying is extremely less damaging than Hair straightening (lots of split ends).

And the flat iron - use a low heat setting.
it will if u use it a lot or every day.

u just need to make sure that you use a hair damage shampoo if u do use it everyday.
YES IF U USE IT A LOT!
Honestly it does damage your hair to an extent. I use one often and I have dry, split ends but I use moisturizing shampoos and leave in conditioners to help with that.

Personally, I feel it's all about how many times you straighten your hair and at what temperature setting you use it. And never straighten your hair wet, it is definitely not good.

But if you are going to straighten your hair, either put conditioner in it for about an hour or so, and then wash it out and put leave in conditioner in to help with dryness. Especially if you dye or highlight your hair. Least that's what the lady at my salon said.

Hopefully that helps!

It can damage your hair if you are not careful.... you can not go to slow on it or it will burn.. I suggest getting advice from your hairdresser
it could damage your hair if u use it too much but if you use it casually probably not
Yes it will.

BUT. you can use heat defense.. Redken . VO5. you put it on before you straighten your hair it's suppose to help a lot, salons use it.
It depends on the texture of your hair. Certain types of hair wil get damaged by it. As long as your hair is clean and straight you should be fine.
I used to not straighten my hair at all, but then i started to and i couldn't stop!!!! lol, and yes your hair will get damaged, but there is a way of preventing that, use Heat protection styling spray before you straighten a section. I would reccomend the brand Nexus, and it is sold at Meijer, it's usually about 11 dollars, but you could get it on clearance sometimes.

best of luck
Yeah, it damages it. But try using a heat protecting spray and deep conditioning your hair in a hair mask 2x a week. It will lessen the damage.. But either way, there will be SOME damage..
Your mom is right, but you can prevent some of the damage by using products formulated to protect hair from the heat and also using a high quality ceramic flat iron. Also, do not straighten your hair more than twice a week and let air dry whenever possible (dryers also damage the hair with the heat.)
it will damage Ur hair if u use it alot
OHHH yeah!!! Especially if you plan on using it a couple times a week or more. It dries out your hair and gives you split ends. Unless you find a really good product that will help protect your hair against that kind of damage.
well if you buy a good one (around $90- 120) then thats a good one. i have a bad one and it was $20 and it kinda damaged my hair. but my friend bougth a really good one from the company CONAIR, and it was around $90 somthing, and its great and it doesnt damage her hair. (that why i use her at times) =]..
it gives my friends split ends but it doesnt do anything to me and i use mine everyday! so i guess it just depends on the kind of hair you have.
If you use heat protection styling creams like L'oreal studio line hot straight then you should be fine.

:)
I don't think they they damage your hair.If you use them for along time they might damage your hair, but i'm not sure.
It really won't if you use it moderately, use heat damage protection, and get your hair trimmed every 1-2 months, the damage shouldn't be extreme. Also, don't use cheap straighteners. Hair straighteners are something you should invest money into. (if you want good results)
